King of the Mountain 2013 finally receives his trophy!

Marcus (holding his trophy) has waited a little while for the King of the Mountain trophy to be found.  Turns out, the engravers had it hidden the entire time.  Marcus was the first boy up the mountain at Year 6 Camp earlier this year.

Warmer Weather.......

We decided to take our books outside under the shelter of the big Rata tree today.
Beautiful warm weather.  I did however see quite a few 'pink' shoulders today.
Sunblock is most definitely required and should be applied before coming to school as well as reapplying throughout the day.

WORLD VISION INTERMEDIATE REWARDS DAY

Today, 4 of our Year 7/8 students are attending a rewards day which celebrates the 'top' schools in the lower north island.  This is the 3rd year we have been invited to attend this day which encompasses the overall picture of World Vision, what can be done with the money we raise and leadership skills for intermediate students.  YOU could be one of these people next year Room 10 as you enter your 7th year at primary school.  The 11 schools represented here at the Dowse Museum in Lower Hutt have raised over $70,000 for Bougainville, Papua New Guinea.
That equates to helping 8900 children!!!!AMAZING!!!
Next year we are raising money for Bangladesh.

KAPA HAKA - 2013

Congratulations to the group who represented our school at the annual Kapa Haka festival at El Rancho.  6 members of Room 10 joined the almost 100 student strong group ranging from Year 1s to Year 8's.  The group that stands up when Waikanae finishes are ex students who attend Kapiti College. They are then followed by Morgan who we all know well at school from his time as a teacher aide.
A very special day.

NOVEMBER CALENDAR for Room 10

CALENDAR ART - PACIFIC ISLAND TAPA

We thought we would share our calendar art with you.
These are all in a yellow clear file folder at our school office so that orders for a 2014 calendar can be made and paid for.  They make fantastic christmas gifts for family members.

Our artwork also linked into our geometry unit this term.

There were many stages in making our calendar art:
1.  Folding a square from an A4 piece of paper
2.  Folding the paper so we had symmetrical quadrilaterals and triangles to help with our design
3.  Using a 'pacific island' theme of flowers to create a symmetrical design
4.  Colour in bold colours with waxy crayon
5.  Scrunching the paper up outside several times to get a flaky look
6.  Covering it in watered down brown dye and left to dry
7.  Once dry, we placed it face down on newspaper and ironed it
8.  Watered down dye painted onto our calendar art base and left to dry
9.  Glued our tapa cloth design onto the base for our finished piece

Technology with Room 20

Ashley, Marcus T, Corey, Jasmine, Sydney, Eleanor, Emilene, Vlad, Craig, Jade and Vincent spent some time in Room 20 with the 5 year olds to help them with the tricky parts of their technology creations.  The design brief was to make a chair for their teddy to sit on.  The success criteria was for them to be big enough to fit teddy, sturdy and strong so it stays still when teddy sits on it, creative and unique.  Some of the chairs had drink holders!!!

KIDS CAN COOK KITCHEN

Today we had so much fun listening, cooking and tasting with 'Master Chef'!  We made apple and silverbeet french crepes which tasted delicious.  We learnt that the tip of your tongue tastes sweet, and the sides and middle of your tongue tastes sour.  When you put both together you create 'savoury'.
Sydney was 'Sous (su) Chef' which means 2nd in command whilst in the kitchen.  One of the pictures shows 'Master' plugging Sydney in so she can whisk the flour, egg and milk!

Tongariro Trout Fishing

Marcus had a fantastic weekend away with his grandparents and thoroughly enjoyed the Tongariro Trout Fishing experience.  They only do it 5 times a year and he got to be part of it.  Check out the flyer he brought back to school to share with us.  Some of you may be up that way in the summer holidays.

We had a good turn out on Sunday for the Waikanae Surf club registrations.  Great to see some Room 10 faces.  It is not too late to join.  Check out the website for more information.  See if you can spot Mrs Cameron's husband.......

Term 4 Reading Challenge

See if you can take a photo and upload onto a google doc or some kind of presentation you would like to share with the rest of the class at the end of term.
Some of our class members may enjoy reading the books you have read.
This reading challenge replaces our weekly reading log and it's intention is to show you that reading is fun and can be enjoyed almost anywhere.
Please use the devices we have in class to assist you and ask questions.  Happy to help as always ;)

These photos show some of our students reading plays.

Roman used PicMonkey to create this amazing collage of photos.  Awesome.
